VIDEO RITUAL
Six TVs sit surrounding a pit of VHS tapes, the hiss of static and the sounds of a movie emit from two more TVs in the center, the audience is witnessing the Video Ritual. As people come and go their nostalgia begins to haunt the room, adding to the atmosphere of the space and giving it purpose.
CRT televisions reference the past because of their outdated status in society. Newer technology has replaced them in our homes, but they live on in the memories some have from when they were relevant. VHS tapes, the primary medium for watching videos at one time, have been deconstructed and the film fills the void between the broken TVs and the working ones. It’s as if the outer layer of TV sets are feeding the inner layer. The movie playing in the center provides audio and movement to the dark room and lures people in to observe the scene.
Hauntology - a philosophical concept of Jacques Derrida, is a primary inspiration for this piece. Our past haunts our day-to-day living in minor ways, influencing the clothes we wear and the music we listen to. We feel nostalgia because people are sentimental creatures, and tend to fondly remember old memories. This is the physical manifestation of VIDEO RITUAL.
