CAVITY SERIES
In CAVITY, pieces of driftwood are repeatedly barraged with holes of varying sizes using a small hand held tool. The size of these elements are determined by the level of decay in certain parts of the wood. The entire surface is covered in these termite inspired marks.
This piece is obsessive to the point of being uncomfortable, and this is evident in the process of creating this piece. What originally started out as an obsessive pattern slowly turned into monotonous repetition. To feel oneself losing concepts of time and focus, and knowing that what progress is being made is very little and almost seems insignificant in the long run is enough to drive most crazy. Then one steps back to look at the progress that’s been made and is surprised to find an excessive very small holes crawling across the surface of the wood. There was also the repetitive noise of my drill, and sometimes that was the only sound in the studio. This was my experience. The texture on the surface of the log also invites the audience to investigate the form further. While the inspiration from insects is apparent there’s also a sense of unease. The wood was long dead before being manipulated by an outsider. It’s become full of little cavities while still preserving most of its original form.
The repetition we experience in our own lives would drive us crazy if there was nothing to break the cycle. When faced with situations where there is no break we experience unease, dissatisfaction, anxiety, and a slew of other negative feelings
