SUBSTRUCTURE
SUBSTRUCTURE is a piece that embodies the nature of perception and balance by constructing a rudimentary scaffolding system to support a section of a torso. When observing, it appears as if it could fall over at any moment. It’s this feeling that confirms the idea that balance can be achieved through imperfection and simple mechanics.
The ideal human form representing contemporary society rests upon the foundation provided by our past and portrayed through rusted rebar. The concept of “hauntology” (a term derived from ontology) has been an influence on this piece from the beginning. It’s this idea that because outside forces influence us all differently. We end up believing in things and ideas that don’t exist in reality, but are subjective and thus are “ghosts.” Nostalgia and the desire to rebuild a past idealized because of our tendencies to misremember the true reality causes us to long for a past that never happened.
The past we remember is imperfect but it still acts as a foundation and structure for the choices we continually have to make. It’s in our nature to misremember, but acknowledging this flaw allows us to make better decisions and check ourselves.
