HOUSE
HOUSE invites the audience to think about the cycle of building and how it influences the landscape, with suburbs, in particular, being the main issue. They pop up seemingly overnight, and their purpose is to solely make housing developers richer. House plans are repeated, buildings are stacked close together, and prices are usually outside the budget of the homeowners in the area - thus making their construction irrelevant to the existing environment.
In the video, a simple house shape sits in the middle of the woods. As time progresses, another appears on the screen. The background begins to change as well, representing the beginning of change for both the home and the landscape. Another form is added, the once two-dimensional form has evolved into three dimensions. While it is the same backdrop, the details it had before are missing. Three shapes represent the beginning, the progress, and the end never fully leaving the screen. This represents the impact. Our intrusion continues to affect the area even after we are gone.
The solution to this problem simply lies in conscientious development. Buildings last a long time, and developments will continue to happen. Thus, it becomes important to design with the future in mind. Instead of copy and pasting buildings across an area, designing with the geography in mind might be a better solution.
